The Thrillseekers – Nightmusic Volume 3 (2008)

THRILLSEEKERS – THE DJ:

In the eight years since Steve first turned Decktition he’s smashed clubs from London to Los Angeles… And then returned to smash them again! 2005 saw him release his debut compilation ‘Night Music Volume 1’, which Mixmag described as “a must for trance fans of every taste”. ‘Night Music Volume 2’ followed hot on its heels, prompting DJ Mag to predict that “on this cutting edge evidence alone, The Thrillseekers will make the jump up to the major leagues”.  In 06 & 07 Steve has become a regular in the magazine’s Top 100 DJs chart, notching positions at 52 & 45.

THRILLSEEKERS – THE SINGLES – THE REMIXES:

Thrillseekers made his first mark on the EDM world in about the most definitive way possible. Synaesthesiawas played live, for the first time by Paul van Dyk, spinning his Radio 1 set at the station’s legendarily debauched 1999 Ibiza weekend. From there the track moved rapidly to all-out anthem status. ‘Dreaming of You’, ‘NewLife’, ‘By Your Side and last year’s ‘Waiting Here For You followed, further exploding his fanbase. His remix portfolio spans some 30+ remaps, including remixes for such leading lights as Tiësto, Armin, Ferry Corsten, Chicane (twice), Timo Maas (twice!), Lange & Reflekt.

THRILLSEEKERS  – ‘NIGHTMUSIC’ HISTORY:

Accompanied by a 25 date world tour, ‘Night Music Vol 1’ sent a big ripple across the trance pond, on its release in October 2005. Universally applauded for an imaginative, cutting edge tracklisting and sophisticated key-mixing, it cemented The Thrillseekers DJ reputation. The follow-up, ‘NM2’ was released on Adjusted throughout Europe and independently in The States and Russia, China & S.E. Asia. The compilation went on to sell over 15,000 units (at time of writing) and spawned a behemoth 40 date, 5 month-long tour that spanned the globe…

Tiesto’s In Search of Sunrise: Asia (2008)

The number 7 is God’s very own number, and is associated with Divine completion and perfection ….. :) This was definitely something that would have fitted our birthday earlier this month but the tracklist wasn’t even released back then!

When we first heard rumours Tiesto was doing another ISOS we couldn’t believe it. So fast after the last installment would surely be just a rumour. But anything is possible and apparently so is a new In Search Of Sunrise :)

This time Tiesto takes us on a trip through Asia. With this concept he could create two different sets that will give the people a great impression of what its like to tour Asia. The first disc expresses the atmosphere and beauty of Asia, whereas the second is aimed to offer a great view on how energetic Asia is.

Like he said in the promotional video it starts off with some asian flutes. Don’t be scared, the Asian theme isn’t that noticeable in the music. More so in the track titles. After the intro it blends beautifully with Andy Duguid’s latest stunning creation. Andy has yet again asked the beautiful wife of Chris Lake, Gita Bakradze (Leah), to perform and write the vocals. A true proggy vocal masterpiece! The tone has been set instantly. Yohkoh is the 2nd track with an Asian title. King Unique have outdone themselves creating an ultimate crossover track which has been quickly picked up by Tiesto already last year. With a typical oldschool feel it was sure to be a winner from the get go. Next up he takes a direction that some people will find unusual.
Motorcitysoul‘Space Katzle‘ in the Sydenham Remix has been a big hit in the more underground regions of the scene.

Next up is Ton TB who has created a decent trancer, the first half of the track isn’t that interesting but you’ll forget that after hearing the second half. Rachael Starr and Jerry Ropero are two of our least favorite tracks on the first disc. We think Tiesto could’ve done something better there. The 16 Bit Lolita’s have teamed up with Eliano Daviti & Roberto Scilatti of The Veil Kings (ISOS6) to create 2 beautiful tracks on the first disc. Roberto is of course also known from ‘Loop Control’ back in the Magik days. Kamui‘Get Lifted‘ is a fan favorite that was thought to be on ISOS6 already. Tiesto is taking over next with one of his own remixes quickly followed in Airbase’s latest creation. Although we’re not big fans of Airbase’s work, this one, with his own girlfriend on the vocals, is definitely a turn for the better. It sounds like it has been done before, but
at least its a good track.

‘Dokmai‘ is the 2nd track by the 16 Bits with Eliano Daviti & Roberto Scilatti and yet again a huge fan favorite. Tiesto first spun this already in 2006 and fans have been desperately awaiting the ID since. Finishing up the first disc is Cressida with a decent trancer and a new Allure featuring Christian Burns‘ on the vox. Burns is of course known for his work with Inhaler and the Tiesto hit single ‘In The Dark’. Clouded Leopard finishes up as outro to CD1

Disc two begins with Steve Forte Rio featuring JES on the vocals. Not really vocals, more moaning but it sounds good either way. Zoo Brazil quickly follows with what can be seen as one of the best tracks of 2008 already. An amazing production by John Andersson & Johan Emmoth. Beltek surprises also with the
third track. The young Martin Bijelic from Slovenia has done an outstanding job landing one of his first releases on ISOS. Dutch upcomer Sied van Riel has kept his tune Rush safe from attention thereby
giving Tiesto one of his secret weapons from the last few months.

After ‘Rush‘ it’s time for Mat Zo’s take on Tiesto’s own ‘Driving To Heaven‘. A beautiful remix that has been in Tiesto’s box a while already. He seems to like it even more than his own Original. With Carl B following it seems more and more obvious that with this ISOS Tiesto is finally giving his most loyal fans all the tunes from the last years that they have been begging for so much.

Kimito Lopez quickly changed the artist name from Amazing Maze to his own name after hearing it would be featured on ISOS. His ‘Melkweg‘ track was already featured on Club Life last year. With JPL and Estiva Vs Marninx following we’re already halfway disc two. Newcomer Existone created a great trancer that will tear a room apart with ‘Wounded Soul‘.

For the last part of disc 2 Tiesto turns it up one final time. Andre Visior & Kay Stone got Guiseppe Ottaviani, from Nu NRG fame, to remix their track and the Italian has yet again made sure to churn out a pumping track full of energy. With Hensha‘The Curtain‘ the curtain has almost fallen on this installment of In Search Of Sunrise. An awesome trancer that sets the mood for the grand finale. A track that has been a sure hit in almost every Tiesto set of the past year. ‘Tanz Der Seele‘ is the final track of the second disc. Martin Roth sure has done an outstanding job on the remix under his Y.O.M.C. guise. With Manilla Rising as outro, Tiesto wraps up the final disc in style.

Tiesto might not be perceived as good as he used to be by a lot of people. You can always count on him to do some things (extremely) perfectly. The “In Search Of Sunrise“-series is still definitely one of those things!! Out June 10th… be SURE to pick it up

Airwave – Touareg (2008)

Airwave’s fourth album, named “Touareg”, is highly anticipated by the fans and for a reason. Several teasers on Youtube gave away some samples of the tracks and caused quite a stir on the people who took the time to listen to it. Laurent Véronnez, the man behind Airwave has recently released quite some albums under different projects (Lolo and Cape Town), which did quite well. Now with Touareg we get 17 tracks (digitally or on two discs) which are full length, something we don’t seem too often nowadays. All looks bright, but does it live up to the high expectations? Let’s give it a go..

Disc One
Notice of Eviction is a superb, Hollywood sci-fi blockbuster inspired opening of the album. The mood is dark, depressing even and this tune is probably made when L-Vee got a notice of eviction (see his blogs in 2007). A great opening for an album for sure! Next up is Punjabi Child which starts with an echanting indian vocal sample which slowly unfolds in a brilliant and moody melodic trancetrack. The pace is slow and the track tops the ten minutes, but the long build-up enhances the hypnotic feel of this tune. The breakdown introduces a brilliant melody which will please fans that liked the first disc of the previous album Trilogique. Sunshine In Your Heart is the first vocal track and features the calm and comforting vocals of Didier Likeng, a gospel singer. In the atmospheric breakdown he delivers excellent vocal work. A very smooth and original track.

Candy Of Life is maybey the weakest track on the album, sampling the shaking of Tic Tac candy boxes. The idea is quite good, but can’t keep the listener focused for the full nine minutes. A stronger or more explosive melodyline could have made this a bit more interesting. Coka’s Song is a feelgood and upbeat track featuring Coka, an African artist that L-Vee met in Brussels. It’s just amazing how good Coka’s african voice and instrument match the great melodies in this track. A raw electro part in the middle adds some power to the tune. Superb! Mind Repair Centre is up next and is a powerfull trancer with a cool melody with a touch of groovyness. Urban Touareg is just an unreal experience, an energypacked track featuring maybey one of the best classical breakdowns in history? The beautiful classic voice grabs your throat during the breakdown and won’t let go before the techy edged beats kick in and turn the dancefloor into a total frenzy

Mahébourg Express again features Coka, the guy we know from Coka’s song. The structure of this song is quite alike Coka’s Song. The tune is a tad softer and happier (without getting cheesy, it’s possible yes!) and is a really nice song to listen at. Most people good have thought this was a Lolo track, if it wasnt for the rawer part in the middle. Batignolles Blues is the closer of disc one and is just simply fantastic. This is a fast-paced track that introduces Ludovic Meyer on the alto sax during the breakdown. Again we are treated with a superb combo of instruments that delivers the listener a unique trip. Amazing!

Disc Two
Disc two is an eight track exercise full of old hits in a new jacket. Some might call it a bonus disc, although the eight tracks really have something to offer. First we get a row of 2008 remixes of big and wellknown Airwave tracks. Save Me is probably one of the biggest tracks Airwave has released and this 2k8 remix still stands strong with it’s dramatic atmosphere. Above The Sky from 1998 gets a decade treatment and sounds even angrier, including a sudden electrance swith during the middle of the track. The Division Bell is maybey the biggest surprise in the row of reworks. The original sounds really dated, but in a new jacket the melody sounds remarkably good.

Sunday Dark Firma is a mash-up of many older Airwave track (Terra Firma, Sunday Break and Alone In The Dark, if i’m correct). A great update of these classic track that melt together in sad, atmospheric tune. Lightspeed 2k8 follows it’s predecessor quite close in terms of sounds and atmosphere, but can’t really deliver something new. Sky Blues 2k8 does deliver something new, but the electrification of this trancer didn’t grow on me for some reason.

One of the lesser known aliases of Airwave is Sagittaire, which he introduced a couple of months ago. With this alter ego he recreates the Trilogique track Angelica (featuring Markus Schulz). The tune is stripped down to a funky and extremely deep trancetrack, really nice and dreamy! The closer of Disc 2 is really something special. Bonzai describes it as an experimental beats track and that’s probably the closest that I can come too. The tune is a sort of hyperactive breakbeat track with some nifty sounds with a fantastic Haka (that’’s what those Maori guys chant when they are gonna smash your back with rugby). The melody is really great and happy. Cool tune!

Conclusion
With the current flood of trancemusic on the market it’s difficult to search for quality music. Pure trancemusic is hard to find at the moment. But we can call Touareg a pure trance album. The passion and love for the music can be heard on this album, not only in the music but also on the few vocal performances. Everything feels so balanced, not too much vocals, not too much nonsense trance blasters. Not everything is A++, but it’s rare to hear such an album nowadays with full length, umixed and unfaded tracks. The 5th of May this album will be in the digital shops, but you can also preorder at the Bonzai website. No matter what, no matter how, get this album to remember what trance was all about: emotion, passion and quality! Full score 5/5!
